On 4th November, 1918 the hostilities between Italy and the Empire of Austria and Hungary ceased; this saw the end of a war that would set out most of the history and of the fate of Europe for the rest of the century and which would weigh on Italian territory by leaving signs that are still visible in the towns that have been rebuilt, as well as in the mountains – that is to say in an environment which is sacred and untouchable par excellence.

So deep are the said signs that after 90 years it is still proper to recall and to honour the memory of man, his concepts, the will to build and rebuild, the appeal for peace that seems to be the only message we are capable of accepting when a war has ended.

[...] Giampietro Agostini interprets the signs on the territory – in this case the signs left after the war, sublimating and handing them over to us. The signs are thus beyond any form of judgement and free of emotions. Yet, at this very moment, the images of age-old walls, communication trenches, as well as huts, thus become artistic illustrations, of admonition with a pitch which is higher than any other word's, affect us with the force of memory and with the history they embrace.

We are entrusted to this photographer's watchful eye, reflecting on the sorrow, the fatigue, the suffering of man and of the land, stirred by the emotions these images bring about.
Art affords us with the possibility to peruse man and land with an inquisitive and respectful eye which is guided along by thinking and inventiveness: the "Borders of memory" to hand down to the coming generations depend on the artist's watchful eye!

Il 4 novembre 1918 cessavano le ostilità tra il regno d'Italia e l'impero d'Austria e d'Ungheria; terminava così una guerra che avrebbe determinato gran parte della storia e del destino dell'Europa per tutto il secolo successivo ed avrebbe inciso nel nostro territorio imprimendo segni ancora visibili nei paesi ricostruiti e perfino nelle montagne, in uno spazio cioè, che per sua definizione, ci sembra inviolabile ed intoccabile.

Tale è stata la profondità dei segni lasciati, che a distanza di 90 anni è ancora opportuno rievocare e celebrare gli uomini, le loro idee, la forza di costruire e ricostruire, l'istanza di pace che sembra l'unico messaggio che possiamo raccogliere dopo che una guerra è finita.

[...] Giampietro Agostini legge i segni del territorio, in questo caso i segni lasciati dalla guerra e ce li restituisce sublimati, elevati al di sopra di qualsiasi giudizio, purificati da qualunque emozione. Eppure proprio in questo momento le immagini dei vecchi muri, dei camminamenti, delle baracche diventando quasi gesti artistici, ci ammoniscono con voce più forte di qualunque parola, ci toccano con la forza della memoria e della storia che racchiudono.

Affidati allo sguardo di questo fotografo, riflettiamo sul dolore, la fatica, la sofferenza degli uomini e della terra, sollecitati nelle emozioni che queste immagini evocano.
L'arte ci offre la capacità di guardare agli uomini e alla terra con un occhio guidato dalla curiosità e dal rispetto, dal pensiero e dalla creatività: le "frontiere della memoria" da offrire alle generazioni future dipendono da questo sguardo.
