Giampietro Agostini - Tracce

Starting out from zero

At times the landscape lies before us like a painted canvas. In moving one's eyes from one point to another we repaint it by creating signs, selecting and inventing relations which at the end constitute the sense of the image.

The camera, an instrument at man's disposal, has the power of fixing the signs and relations which the eye creates and perceives but does not retain. The operation of "fixing" has many points in common with that of imagining.

This photographic work by Giampietro Agostini has the title "Attese" as its genesis. With this the author intended to refer to the well-known cycle of canvases in which Lucio Fontana had carried out cuts: a radical solution to the question of the psychological-physical space of the canvas and, at one and the same time, that of the gesture of the painter who finds himself facing this space and, contemporaneously, also the space of the world.

Why does Agostini refer to Fontana's cuts?

Born in the region of Trent, Agostini studied photography in Milan to where he moved and now lives and works today: a clear-cut passage front a mountain environment to an urban one. Over the years he has produced delicate professional reportages and series of portraits. He has worked within the fields of industrial photogaphy and in that regarding the landscape of a documentary matrix, also taking part in important publicly commissioned projects. In these the subject matter of his attention has at length been the contemporary landscape in that complex transformation from the industrial phase to that of the post-industrial one with all of its stratifications and all of its aesthetic instances of disharmony and uncertainty. A landscape in which nature merely constitutes the distant and faded background or backdrop, often hardly or not at all visibile, by now lost.

And yet nature still exists. It exists where the landscape is greater and more pure, simple (even if only apparently) and where the signs are more infrequent. In the Trent Region, for example, in the valley where Agostini was born and to which he always returns, a place so different from the city in which he has become a photographer and to which he is by new bound. He therefore returns, taking photography with him. Both his origins and photography. What he was (childhood, the mountain, the sky and the wind) and what he is today (an identity found in the city and in photography, the art of industry), all taken together. And then, by way of dilation, photography together with other places in which the natural landscape continues to exist. Although by way of what photography can one talk, today, about that nature which still survives, albeit far away?

Agostini carries out a choice of synthesis and clarity: that of simplifying, of containing the number of signs. He removes and enacts a "breaking" with regards to complexity, concentrating each time on few elements. He tends to reduce the landscape to the essential bands of which it is originally composed: the sky, earth and water. He attempts to take photography back to its origins -light and darkness, the negative and the positive - by way of clear-cut white and black backgrounds. He adopts strong and distinct compositions, often symmetrical, at times Rorschach signs or marks. He alternates three-dimensional depths with flat and two-dimensional surfaces, as if they were the fullness and the emptiness of the world. He attempts to carry out a stripping of the landscape which he often divides into above and below, into photographs which are all horizontal. The horizon consequently takes on definitive importance: it governs the equilibrium of the image both in a formal and in a tendentially symbolic sense. Caesura between the concreteness of the earth or water and the immateriality of the sky, it seems to summarize the very idea of landscape.

Irrespective of how Agostini's meeting came about with Lucio Fontana's "Attese" that radical gesture which all at once annulled painting and questioned the idea itself of space was able to furnish the photographer with an unexpected and sudden cue for a sort of "refounding" of the idea of photography within his own personal story, being faced by the problem of reconquering nature, a distant and desired element. To try to start out again from zero, to affirm the idea that photography is not only an instrument for analyzing and documenting but also one for imagining. Leaving the vision to express itself by way of me immensity of the emptinesses and accept the force of the form without being afraid of it. Snow, wood, grass, water, clouds and above all the horizon. Agostini wants photography to no longer resemble the world but only to resemble photography. That photography is only image, that totality of perceptive elements which the eye creates when it scours the landscape, freely repainting it. The accentuated frame which Agostini leaves around the image is a sentimental gesture: it says that the value of each framing is extremely elevated and that inside the rectangle something unique is enclosed, something which must neither escape not elude. Inside the dark frame the landscape is still occasionally described in the elements that compose it, sometimes stylized and at other times decidedly more stripped, flattened. Agostini has undertaken a sulitary journey towards the abstraction of which today we see the first stages - which we imagine will continue at length, without our knowing where it will end.
